Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you drive

Booking

Making a reservation through 4Drive Austria is straightforward. Select your location, dates and vehicle type, then complete the online form. You receive a voucher by email with all details including the local company contact information and pickup instructions.

How do I make a booking?

Choose your pickup location, dates and vehicle on our website. Fill in driver details and pay the booking advance online with a debit or credit card. You will receive a confirmation voucher by email within minutes containing the local company details and pickup instructions.

What information do I need to provide?

You need the main driver's full name, date of birth, email address, phone number and driving licence details. If adding extra drivers, their information is collected at pickup. Flight details are optional but help if you are collecting from an airport terminal.

Can I modify my booking dates after confirming?

Yes, contact us at [email protected] with your booking reference. Changes depend on availability and may affect the total amount. We process modifications as quickly as possible, usually within a few hours during office hours.

Payment and Advance

When you book online, you pay an advance amount by card to secure the vehicle. The remaining balance is settled when you collect the keys. The accepted payment methods for the balance vary depending on the specific vehicle you have reserved.

How much do I pay online?

You pay a booking advance online when you confirm the reservation. This amount is clearly shown during checkout. The remaining balance is due when you collect the vehicle. The advance secures your booking and is part of the total cost.

What payment methods do you accept online?

The online booking advance must be paid by card - debit or credit card. We do not accept cash payments online. For detailed information about accepted card types and payment processing, visit our payment methods page.

How do I pay the remaining balance?

The balance is paid when you collect the vehicle. Accepted payment methods depend on the specific vehicle you booked and are stated in your confirmation voucher and during the booking process. Options typically include debit card, credit card or cash. Check your voucher for the exact requirements for your reservation.

Deposit and Credit Card

The local company may place a security hold on a card at pickup. This is a temporary block, not a charge. The amount and card type required depend on the specific vehicle. Some vehicles do not require this hold at all.

Do I need a credit card?

It depends on the vehicle you book. Some vehicles require a credit card in the main driver's name for a security hold at pickup. Others accept a debit card or require no security hold at all. The requirement is shown clearly during booking and in your voucher. If you do not have a credit card, look for vehicles that state alternative requirements.

What is the security hold and when is it released?

The security hold is a temporary block on your card, not a charge. The amount depends on the vehicle and covers potential damage or policy violations. It is released after you return the vehicle in the agreed condition, typically within 7-14 days depending on your card issuer. If you use a debit card and are concerned about available funds, consider increasing your card limit before pickup.

Can I use someone else's card?

No. Any card used for the security hold must be in the main driver's name. The person collecting the vehicle must present their own valid card matching their driving licence and booking details.

Documents and Age

You need a valid driving licence and identification at pickup. The local company checks these documents and adds them to the rental agreement. Age and licence requirements vary by vehicle type, so confirm eligibility during booking.

What documents do I need at pickup?

Bring your valid driving licence held for the minimum period stated in your voucher, a passport or national ID card, and the card used for payment if applicable. If your licence is not issued in the European Union, an International Driving Permit is recommended. All documents must be original - photocopies are not accepted.

How old do I need to be?

Minimum age varies by vehicle. Many standard vehicles require drivers to be at least 21 years old with a licence held for one year. Larger vehicles, SUVs and premium models often require drivers aged 25 or older with longer licence history. Check the specific age requirement shown during booking.

Can I add an additional driver?

Yes. Additional drivers can be added at pickup for a daily fee. They must present a valid driving licence and meet the same age and licence requirements as the main driver. All drivers are registered on the rental agreement and covered under the terms.

Pickup and Return

Vehicles are collected from the local company at the location and time you selected during booking. Pickup may be at a desk, a terminal meet point or with delivery to your accommodation depending on the provider. Return procedures are confirmed in your voucher.

Where exactly do I collect the vehicle?

Your voucher contains precise pickup instructions including the company name, address and contact details. Some companies operate desks at airports or stations. Others arrange a meeting point near the terminal or deliver the vehicle to your hotel. The exact method depends on the local company assigned to your booking.

What happens during the pickup process?

You present your documents and the voucher. The company verifies your details and explains the rental agreement terms. You sign the contract which lists any existing damage to the vehicle. Inspect the vehicle carefully and confirm that all noted damage is recorded. You receive keys, registration documents and contact information for support during your rental.

Can I return the vehicle outside office hours?

Some companies offer key drop-off outside operating hours. This must be arranged in advance. Contact the local company using the details in your voucher to confirm availability and instructions. An inspection may be conducted the following business day.

Driving in Austria

Austria has well-maintained roads and clear traffic regulations. Motorways and expressways require a vignette sticker. Speed limits are enforced strictly. Winter driving conditions require specific equipment and caution on alpine routes.

Do I need a vignette for motorways?

Yes. A vignette sticker is required for motorways and expressways. You can purchase one at the border, petrol stations or online before you travel. The vignette is not always included with the vehicle, so confirm with the local company at pickup or arrange it as an optional extra when booking.

What are the speed limits?

Speed limits are 50 km/h in urban areas, 100 km/h on rural roads and 130 km/h on motorways unless otherwise posted. Traffic drives on the right. Speed cameras are common and fines are issued for violations. Always observe posted limits, especially in villages and construction zones.

Can I drive to other countries?

Cross-border travel to neighbouring countries is generally permitted but requires advance notice and may involve additional documentation or fees. Some countries need specific permits. Inform us during booking if you plan to leave Austria so the local company can provide the necessary paperwork and confirm any restrictions for your vehicle.

What about winter driving?

Winter tyres are mandatory from November to April when snow or ice is present. Many alpine roads are cleared regularly but remain winding and steep. Snow chains may be required on certain routes. Winter equipment can be arranged as an optional extra at booking. Check weather and road conditions before travelling into mountain areas.
