4Drive Austria is a booking platform that connects drivers with established local vehicle providers across Austria. We do not own a fleet. Instead, we work with hire companies in major cities to offer a straightforward online reservation process. You search availability, pay a booking advance on our site, and collect your vehicle directly from the local operator at your chosen location.
Our focus is practical access to 4x4 vehicles, SUVs and passenger cars suited to Austrian terrain. Mountain passes, gravel forest roads and alpine weather demand capable machinery. We display clear vehicle specifications - drivetrain type, ground clearance, tyre requirements - so you can match the machine to your route before you commit.
Every hire contract is signed at the counter with the local company. That operator handles the vehicle handover, records any existing damage in the agreement, provides their contact details in your rental voucher, and manages the return inspection. We facilitate the booking; they deliver the service.
The process has four steps. First, enter your pick-up city, dates and times on the home page. Our system queries partner inventory and returns available vehicles with full specifications and pricing for the entire hire period. Compare models, read what is included, check the payment method accepted for the balance.
Second, choose your vehicle and proceed to booking. You pay the advance online by card. Cash is not accepted for online transactions. The advance secures your reservation; the remaining balance is due when you collect the keys, paid according to the method stated in your booking confirmation.
Third, we email your voucher immediately. Print it or save it to your device. The voucher lists the local operator's name, address, contact details, your pick-up time, and the vehicle reserved. It also notes any optional extras you ordered - child seats, additional driver coverage, vignette for motorways, winter equipment, cross-border permits for specific countries.
Fourth, collect the vehicle. Depending on the operator, you may pick up at a counter near the airport or city centre, at a terminal building, or arrange delivery to your hotel. At handover you sign the hire agreement, inspect the vehicle with the staff member, note any scratches or marks on the contract, and receive the keys. Return follows the same procedure in reverse.
We currently connect drivers with local providers in Vienna and Salzburg. Vienna International Airport lies 18 km south-east of the city centre via the A4 motorway, making it a common starting point for trips east or south toward Graz and Klagenfurt. Salzburg serves as a gateway to the western alpine regions, Hallstatt, Grossglockner, and Innsbruck.
Austria is compact - Vienna to Salzburg is 295 km, Vienna to Graz 200 km, Vienna to Hallstatt 285 km - so you can explore multiple regions in a single trip. Right-hand traffic, well-maintained roads, and clear signage simplify navigation. Speed limits are 50 km/h in urban areas, 100 km/h on rural roads, 130 km/h on motorways. A vignette sticker is required for motorways and expressways; purchase it at the border, petrol stations or online before you drive.
Some vehicles on our platform are offered without a security deposit hold at pick-up. This means the local operator will not block funds on your card as a guarantee. You still remain liable up to the excess amount stated in your contract if damage occurs; no deposit simply means no advance freeze of that sum.
This is independent of insurance coverage. Excess and deposit are separate concepts. A vehicle may have a standard excess waiver included and still require no deposit, or it may have a higher excess and no deposit. The hire company assesses eligibility machine by machine, not by category.
If you do not hold a credit card, check the payment requirements for your chosen vehicle in the booking summary and voucher. For rentals that do require a deposit, consider raising the limit on your debit card before travel, or select a machine listed as no-deposit at the search stage.
